Rebels = tribes that are not in power (Eastern Lybia)
Governement = tribes that are in power. (Westen Lybia)
In Lybia you show allegiance to your tribe. This makes it a tribal war. We should get the **** out if these "rebels" can't organize themselves.
Why not just partition the country? Most African and Middle Eastern countries are artificial colonialist constructs anyway, so it's probably the best solution in the long run...
Doesn't have to be official, just de facto once Gaddafi gets tired of losing his armour to coalition airstrikes and the rebels wake up to reality and realise they can't take him on in a direct fight offensively.
how long is short term? what is our exit strategy if the situation remains this way for weeks/months/years?
Realistically it could last years, in one capacity or another, if Gaddafi isn't toppled beforehand. I would imagine probably a few more days of major operations (i.e. blowing stuff up), which are already winding down, followed by a few weeks or months of fairly heavy policing of the no-fly zone, then probably the allies just sending their planes over Libyan airspace than their own for the routine flights that all air forces have to fly...
I'm thinking of Iraqi Kurdistan as a model, but obviously closer to home.
A Canadian General is now leading the campaign in Libya.
Freeloaders, right HC?

according to my settings, there are five pages of nonsense. has anyone commented on the lameness of libya's flag? or can anyone explain the lameness wtihout me having to ggoole it?

i agree it could drag on for years, and what will happen during those years, the fighting will go on and people will continue to be killed. as we speak there are reports of gaddafi arming more 'volunteers'. obviously it's hard to predict how the war will develop in the longer term, but to say that peace will break out due to some airstrikes seems supremely optimistic.

The Libya flag was officially adopted in 1977, and remains the only national flag using a single color.
The flag was said to represent the nation's hope for a green revolution in agriculture.
I did it for you.

you are an idiot and this is latest in a long line of idiotic statements from you on this subject.
seriously, go and educate yourself.
This is a strong statement from a poster who praised the Brotherhood, all the while ignoring:
--Its explicit denial of the Holocaust--indicative of a desire to wipe out Jews altogether, not to mention other "undesirables";
--Its explicit belief in a conspiracy theory (Protocols of Zion) which posits that democracy is (of all things) a Jewish conspiracy;
--Its explicit denial of the right to free speech--express support for blasphemy laws that effectively lead to the killing of political opponents;
--Its explicit opposition to women in places of high political office, including the office of President;
--Its explicit support and sympathy for the Iranian system of government (a form of tyranny)
--Its explicit support for a socialist economic system (refer to the works of their founding members--socialism, in their view, has it wrong not because of the economic model it adopts but because it is atheist and not Islamic)--leading to the concentration of power in the state, and inevitable tyranny.
--Its assassination of several quasi-democratic Egyptian political leaders, including the Egyptian prime minister, in the only time that Egypt was ruled by anything close to a democracy, that is, before Nasser's coup in 1952.
In view of all this, I am stunned that you believe the Brotherhood is anything other than a sick, violent religious cult.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

Gadaffi put all his efforts into thinking up different ways to spell his own name.
